Away for the weekend

I'm going to be away for the weekend and am not bringing my laptop... BUT I'm bringing my colored pencils! So anyway today I've decided to post one of my favorite artists... the kinetic sculpture Theo Jansen... check out his TED Talk and also the images below.  Gorgeous, wonderful stuff... I could ramble on about him but I think video and images are going to speak just fine for themselves

Will have a regular post for you on Monday and a surprise post as well... Have a great weekend everybody!

Quick Post (More Colored Pencils)

Here's one that's a bit more than just a head... I'm going to post a couple more colored pencil sketches this week and then move on to more serious projects.  well I'll probably post more colored pencil sketches as well... but I want to start to focus the blog on something... I'd love to hear your ideas... I was thinking Chimeras... or Caricatures of those who click the follow button over there on the right... basically have a theme besides just posting what I doodle during the day.

Leave your suggestions in this post's or future posts' comment threads!

Thanks,
Chris

More colored pencil drawings!

Here's a couple of heads. I'll start posting more completed colored drawings soon... just getting accustomed to working with colored pencils.

The one above was colored in the dark (at a bar waiting for someone) so It's a bit sloppy but i still like it.

I plan on trying my hand at actual caricatures with this style so if you want one let me know and if I have the time I'll create you one.

Colored Pencils are amazing (except the white one)

My secret santa, Jeff, got me colored pencils for Christmas... haven't used them in forever. Pulled them out this last week and have fallen in love with 'em. Attached is my first three drawings with them... you can see the progression in the coloring as from top to bottom (Homer first, Devito-ish dude last) as I get a better feel for 'em. I'll post more colored pencil drawings in the future. I'm hooked. Thanks Jeff!

Typeface Characters! (01)

So I ran across this interesting tutorial on Typeface Characters...
How to Create Typeface Characters
basically making characters using a particular font and it's symbols to create a character. This creates a uniformity between graphic and type but the goal is for the text pieces used not to be instantly recognizeable. Great for Logo work. Somehow I've never heard of this practice! So I thought I'd give it a shot as it seems like a good way to not only practice character design with set limitations but also a way to stress minimalism in the characters design. Mine's not nearly as cool as his (and yes I just copied his background) but I think it's not too shabby for a first try.... although I did stick to just "U"s and O"s and ":" and "M"s and "V"s and such... my next try I'll be a bit more adventurous. (Moderna is the name of the Font used)

Chimera 2! Hippoldfish the Hippo Goldfish!

Shout out to Amy "Funkytown" for the two animal choices this round.

I'm going to make a Chimera I believe once a week. Followers get to request what two animals they'd like to see so click that button up in the right to play god through me... Mwah-hahahahahahahhahaha!!! :)

(For now keeping it to two animals per Chimera)

FRANDA! (Quick Post)

Quick shout out to Randi who suggested this illustration... a Chimera of a Panda and a Frog... playing the Wii. I took about 2 hours tonight and pumped this out. Here are the images:

after a couple sketches i came up with this... not enough like a frog so I added some froggy details (longer legs... tongue...) in flash and exported as a transparent PNG:

Decided to keep it simple... no real textures or shading in photoshop. just a background and simple lily pad and reflection. I think I could probably improve on it a bit... make it even more zany, but it makes me smile now so "Success!"

2010... the year of the kookaburrito blog!

Happy New Year everybody! Hope you all had a wonderful time. Decided to clean up the site design a bit... will probably clean it up more later... the colors in the logo are off....As for Grumpy Turtle part 2... well I'm not really inspired by the illustration at the moment... I should have come up with a concept for him... i promise to get part 2 done soon. Actually if anyone has an idea as to what setting and situation I should put the turtle in let me know. For now, I thought I'd post some pictures of old work, and also a sketch or two i worked on today.
