PIMENTO MISSILE CRISIS!

Turtles, Rockets, and Pimentos!

So I've decided to create a site for my Children's Book "Pimento Missile Crisis". I'm almost ready to start shopping the book around to publishers so I thought "How can I use the internet to help me get this thing published?" And my answer was "Guerrilla Marketing and Facebook "Like"s!" If I can get a heck of a lot of "Like"s on the website dedicated to the book, I can use that to help sway the publisher. Now I just have to drive traffic to the site. Hmmmm...

anyway take a moment to go to the site and click the "Like" button in the upper left corner.

Thanks a ton!!!

Official Website!

As a blogger, I'm failing... things have been just so busy at my day job, and when I get home I am either working on my Children's book or the Cartoon (pitch in November!!! Woohoo!). I haven't had time to post much of anything on here, and the stuff I want to post (the book illustrations and the cartoon stuff) I can't. So no more promises of new posts every week and no more apologies. I'll post things when I can and as often as I can.

Anywho... on to this post! I just got my site running at www.kookaburrito.com. It's running on CargoCollective... a great community or artists... kind of a "twitter meets portfolio" site. I'll be tweaking the design a bit here and there and getting it set up to take flash movies and swfs and such so I can show you some of the more interactive stuff I've been working on.

Check it out... grab an account... and follow!

Hendrick's Gin Site is LIVE!

Hi all, so if you haven't heard, my day job is an animator/designer for LBi in Soho.
A site I did a ton of animation for just went live that I've been working on for a bit (along with a couple other animators). Check it out and let me know what you think:
www.hendricksgin.com

I think it turned out great... well except for the sound (which the animation team didn't have anything to do with)... it's quite annoying and overbearing (The music at the beginning sounds broken and the short loop of the crowd sound is maddening.), but thankfully you can turn it off.

fishHead part 4

eh... still not in love with it... trying to figure it out... and it's 50inches by 40 something now... can't wait to put it on canvas.

Tuesday, April 13, 2010

fishHead part 3

well I didn't get to work on it much at all again... still sick but I threw some more color in there... it's taking a bit since I originally made this at... say business card size... and I'm blowing it up and adding back in all the details so I can get it printed at 40inches wide on canvas!
Next thing to do is to add more details in there... decide on a background... and then bring it into Corel Painter so I can make it look more like an oil painting.

Alright I'm going to bed. Hopefully I can beat this icky feeling so I can get back to work.

fishHead part 2

didn't have much time to work on him... but I thought I'd post the initial sketch and where it's at now. Getting a sore throat and starting to feel a bit achy so I may go to bed here in a moment :P

FishHead Part 1

Here's the rough of the piece i'm working on right now... drawn in sketchbook pro 2010, and am now roughing out the color... I plan to bring it into Corel Painter next.
It's the second in a series... froghead being the first (also not finished)

Oh lordy

So I spent a bit of time working on the next installment at work for our LBillustrated blog... another caricature, and wouldn't you know it... right when i was done the person resigned! Meaning it was a waste :P

Anyway sorry I haven't posted any new pictures in a bit, my free time has been on the cartoon and a children's book. I may post some illustrations from the book, but I want to get it to a certain place before I throw it up online.

I'm still here is pretty much all I'm here to say. I'm going to post something of substance before the end of the week, until then... look at some cool images:

Great FREE Drawing tool!

A procedural drawing html page... not sure about the math behind it, but it's amazing! I especially like the effects you get from the "shaded" brush. It's also great because you can use it with your iPHONE!!! no download needed, just use safari and play!

http://mrdoob.com/projects/harmony/#shaded

Here's a quick doodle I did with it... if you click to enlarge it you can see the mathy-webbyness of it all. Have fun with it and show me what you create with it!

Testing Vimeo links

I want to start posting short snippets of animation on here and apparently Vimeo's links should work pretty easily... let's see shall we... here's an animation run cycle of a future cop... for a game I've been noodling with. Made this awhile ago.

looks like it works pretty darn easily! I'll be posting short animation clips on here now! Woohoo!!!

Busy Bee

I'm done starting every post with an apology on how long it's been since I've posted... well after this time :) Sorry!!!

I've been super busy working on the cartoon pilot and also at work... haven't had much time to focus on anything else. That being said I've decided that instead of promising a certain amount of posts a week... I'm just going to promise that I'll post as much as possible.

So one of the new projects I have at work is I get to make Caricatures of everyone in the office! A huge task as I believe there is around 300 of us now, but I'm signed on to do 1 or 2 every other week. Here's the first one... Our Creative Director loves Air Guitar so naturally....
This hasn't yet been approved, but hopefully they'll enjoy it.

I've never really done caricatures before... and find them actually quite difficult... I had to come up with a process for it, and I think I'll share it next round.

Oh and if you're wondering... his outfit is based off of this Air Guitar Champion :)

Past revamping...

So I used to create a lot of surrealistic cartoons... I've looked back on them and don't think they are very strong anymore... so I thought for practice I'd recreate them now... here's one I'm starting on... first is the old:

And here is the start of the newer piece....

I think these'll be fun to print on canvas...

alrighty it's my birthday so I got to get prepped to go out tonight in the blizzard! I'm thinking initial drinks at Puck Fair and then maybe over to Williamsburg.... call me if you know me and want to meet out.

Hopefully I'll be able to post a bit more info about the cartoon project I'm working on... everything is going awesome!

Long Overdue...

Sorry I haven't posted in awhile, things have been a bit hectic, amazing but hectic. So the weekend I was away I got myself a tattoo... a botanical drawing of a thistle:
I'm loving it... first one so I decided to go big... might as well do it right if you're going to do it at all. It's not completely finished, supposed to have cross sections of the flower, stem, pistol, etc... a study of the flower, but am trying to figure out how I want those pieces laid out first.

The second bit of news is... well I'm not sure how much to say as it's in the beginning stages... but I'm super excited about it... and it's the reason I've not had much time to update as I've been working on it instead in my free time. I guess I'll just say I've been approached to work on a cartoon... character designs, backgrounds and settings... the works. So that's where my time has been... I'm not sure I can, and I don't expect I will be able to say too much more on here or show you the work unfortunately but I'll see if I can't whet your whistles some time down the line. Granted if everything works out. Wish me luck!

I think because of this, I'll most likely be updating this blog a little less frequently then I had initially started out doing... My goal is at least once a week and I think that should be doable. Maybe twice but it might move to One post showing my art and the other about something I find Inspirational or Informative.

I want to keep this site going as it's partially the reason I got approached for the Cartoon Gig. That and having a lot of my work on my iPhone. I can't stress this enough... if you have a phone with picture capabilities put your work on there! You never know who you are going to meet and having a mobile portfolio will ensure you make the most out of the situation.

Alrighty I'll see if I can't get an art piece up on here in the next day or two. Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Away for the weekend

I'm going to be away for the weekend and am not bringing my laptop... BUT I'm bringing my colored pencils! So anyway today I've decided to post one of my favorite artists... the kinetic sculpture Theo Jansen... check out his TED Talk and also the images below.  Gorgeous, wonderful stuff... I could ramble on about him but I think video and images are going to speak just fine for themselves

Theo Jansen - TED Talk

Will have a regular post for you on Monday and a surprise post as well... Have a great weekend everybody!

Quick Post (More Colored Pencils)

Here's one that's a bit more than just a head... I'm going to post a couple more colored pencil sketches this week and then move on to more serious projects.  well I'll probably post more colored pencil sketches as well... but I want to start to focus the blog on something... I'd love to hear your ideas... I was thinking Chimeras... or Caricatures of those who click the follow button over there on the right... basically have a theme besides just posting what I doodle during the day.

Leave your suggestions in this post's or future posts' comment threads!

Thanks,
Chris

More colored pencil drawings!

Here's a couple of heads. I'll start posting more completed colored drawings soon... just getting accustomed to working with colored pencils.

The one above was colored in the dark (at a bar waiting for someone) so It's a bit sloppy but i still like it.

I plan on trying my hand at actual caricatures with this style so if you want one let me know and if I have the time I'll create you one.

New Colored Pencil Drawing

Here ya go... just posting another drawing I did last night while watching "Chuck".... new season... kinda "meh".

Colored Pencils are amazing (except the white one)

My secret santa, Jeff, got me colored pencils for Christmas... haven't used them in forever. Pulled them out this last week and have fallen in love with 'em. Attached is my first three drawings with them... you can see the progression in the coloring as from top to bottom (Homer first, Devito-ish dude last) as I get a better feel for 'em. I'll post more colored pencil drawings in the future. I'm hooked. Thanks Jeff!

Typeface Characters! (01)

So I ran across this interesting tutorial on Typeface Characters...
How to Create Typeface Characters
basically making characters using a particular font and it's symbols to create a character. This creates a uniformity between graphic and type but the goal is for the text pieces used not to be instantly recognizeable. Great for Logo work. Somehow I've never heard of this practice! So I thought I'd give it a shot as it seems like a good way to not only practice character design with set limitations but also a way to stress minimalism in the characters design. Mine's not nearly as cool as his (and yes I just copied his background) but I think it's not too shabby for a first try.... although I did stick to just "U"s and O"s and ":" and "M"s and "V"s and such... my next try I'll be a bit more adventurous. (Moderna is the name of the Font used)

Chimera 2! Hippoldfish the Hippo Goldfish!

Shout out to Amy "Funkytown" for the two animal choices this round.

I'm going to make a Chimera I believe once a week. Followers get to request what two animals they'd like to see so click that button up in the right to play god through me... Mwah-hahahahahahahhahaha!!! :)

(For now keeping it to two animals per Chimera)
